How Troops Work

Whiteout Survival uses a rock-paper-scissors counter triangle. The right army beats a bigger army — here's how each type works and when to use it.

The counter triangle

When your troops fight the type they counter, they deal bonus damage and take reduced damage.

Lancers
Weak to
Marksmen
  • Highest HP and Defense
  • Defending your city
  • Leading rallies vs Lancer-heavy targets
  • Prolonged attrition fights
Weakness

Slow with low attack — Marksmen kite and shred them. Avoid sending into Marksman-heavy targets.

Marksmen
Weak to
Infantry
  • Fast, high attack with Lethality
  • Quick offensive strikes
  • Crushing Marksman armies
  • Burst damage in rallies
Weakness

Moderate HP/defense — Infantry walls stop them cold. Reconsider vs Infantry-heavy defense.

Marksmen

Counters
Infantry
Weak to
Lancers
  • Highest raw damage and crit
  • Melt Infantry from range
  • Pure damage rally fillers
  • Strong on defense when kiting
Weakness

Lowest HP/defense — Lancers close the gap and delete them before they can fire.

When to use each type

Attacking a player

Always scout first. Bring Marksmen vs Infantry, Infantry vs Lancers, Lancers vs Marksmen. If you can't scout, Marksmen are usually the safe pick — most players default to Infantry defense.

Defending your city

Infantry is the safest default — their HP buys time for alliance reinforcements. Counter-pick only if your state meta clearly favors one type.

Joining a rally

PvE (Polar Terrors, Bear) — composition matters less, follow the captain's call. Player rallies and SvS — match the lead's strategy and bring what they ask.

Server vs Server (SvS)

Counter knowledge wins SvS. Coordinate with your alliance, learn enemy state's typical comps, and prepare counters during prep phase.

Composition approaches

Balanced

Equal split of all three types. Never fully countered, but never decisive. Flexible but suboptimal.

Specialist

80%+ in one type with a matching combat hero. Peak effectiveness — what most competitive players run.

Counter-pick

Alliance members specialize in different types so the team can counter any comp. Needs strong comms.

Key takeaways

  • Infantry > Lancers > Marksmen > Infantry
  • Always scout before attacking
  • Focus one troop type + matching hero
  • Infantry is the safe default for defense
  • Match your hero's specialization to your troops
  • Coordinate comp with alliance for SvS

The right army beats a bigger one. Scout, counter, win.
